Alphixir Weekly Review · Aug 24–27, 2026
WhatThe week of August 24–27 was a compressed, four-session stretch that stayed firmly in Risk-On territory from open to close. The regime score climbed from 28.2 on Monday to a midweek peak of 42.4 on Wednesday before easing slightly to 41.1 on Friday — all comfortably inside the Risk-On band. Despite that constructive backdrop, SPY managed a modest +0.70% while all four of our strategies finished in negative territory on a total-return basis. Semiconductors and select software names carried the tape higher, with NVDA acting as the clear leadership stock of the week and our single largest contributor. Beneath the surface, however, the internals were uneven: materials, healthcare, and energy pockets lagged, and steel in particular (NUE) was our top detractor. So the headline story was a benign regime masking rotational churn that punished several of our overweight positions. The net result was a week where the index drifted up and our concentrated tilts drifted down.
WhyThe catalyst mix was less about a single macro event and more about a rotation within a Risk-On regime that favored megacap semis and software over the cyclical and defensive baskets we were leaning into. NVDA-led strength reflected continued appetite for AI compute leadership, which lifted our best calls across every strategy. At the same time, steel (NUE) and diversified industrials (DE) came under pressure, and healthcare names like MRK and LLY sold off, dragging our materials- and defensive-tilted books. Energy was a mixed bag — EOG and XOM both weakened, indicating the rotation rewarded growth over value-cyclicals this week. Because the regime score jumped from the high-20s to the low-40s midweek, some of our risk-on positioning was arguably a step behind the fastest-moving leadership. In short, the "why" was intra-regime rotation: the market rewarded a narrow set of leaders while broadening participation stalled in exactly the sectors we were overweight. That divergence, not a regime break, explains the negative alpha.
So WhatFacing a Risk-On tape, all four strategies stayed invested rather than de-risking — a reasonable posture given the regime, but one that cost us relative to SPY this week. Meridian leaned into materials and megacap tech, capturing NVDA's +8.74% but giving it back through NUE, ACN, and MRK, landing at -1.35% alpha. Maverick pressed the same NVDA thesis at higher weight and paid for its concentration in semis-adjacent names, with AMD and KLAC softening into a -1.50% alpha — the widest miss of the group. Sentinel's lighter, more diversified sizing did its job defensively, holding the drawdown to just -0.48% MDD and the smallest alpha gap at -0.87%. Regent's sector-rotation book was hurt by single-name healthcare and energy detractors (LLY, XOM) that overwhelmed solid contributions from MSFT and V. Across 283 picks and 12 sector shifts, our activity was high but the timing of our tilts trailed the week's narrow leadership. The takeaway: in a Risk-On regime where breadth is thin, concentration in the wrong cyclical or defensive pockets can erase megacap wins.
- Sector concentration to watch: Technology continues to carry the largest combined weight across the four books.
